What is it About?
As the beautiful month of May arrives, a new tradition has been embarked. But what tradition is starting? The month of May is designated as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to honor the contributions and influences of Asian/Pacific Americans on the history, culture, and accomplishments of the United States. They influence everything around us, from technology,to TV shows, to clothing. America would be nowhere without them, and we are grateful for them. We can use this month to congratulate their accomplishments. We can also shine a light on the recent outbreak of Asian hate and put an end to it. There are currently over 300,000 Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders residing in the United States. The Library of Congress' Veteran's History Project honors veterans including Kurt Chew-Een Lee, Jaden Kim, Kenje Ogata, Maginia Sajise Morales, Peter Young, and Veasna Rouen who have shared their stories. Asian Pacific Americans: A Digital Archive is a digital collection about Asian Pacific Americans. This month was chosen to celebrate two significant dates: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of important railroad.
